How to become a master stick shift driver

24th October 2008

Do you drive stick shift? Or are you one of those people whose afraid to? Well, there’s nothing to be afraid of. Even though most Americans can’t drive stick and never will, you will be able to. Why? Because of a simple video below. Why are people so afraid of stick shifts? You’d think they were the gear boogeyman. (Insert forced laughter). For the life of me, I can’t understand why so many people look at a car and decide not to buy it simple because it’s not automatic. That’s troublesome. Now, I’m a hypocrite because I don’t drive shift and never will. But you’ll be different. You’ll do what I cannot do. Bring myself to watch the video below.

  1. I enjoy stick shift, i don’t think there is anything to be afraid of it. For those who are afraid i think your video which is too simple will give them some courage to buy stick shift cars.

  4. The boy in the car must have been about twelve years old. My grandfather let my father drive his car when he was about twelve and he got his driver’s license when he was fifteen. I still could not get my father to let me drive any of his three cars (stick and automatic) when I was nineteen. I finally found someone (a coworker) that would let me drive his car so I could get my license when I was twenty two. I would have married my girlfriend eighteen years ago, but she was too selfish to let me drive her car (which had a stick) for the first twelve years since I met her. It took twenty two years to find someone that would let me drive his truck enough to develop proficiency with the stick. At the age of forty one I was driving trucks at work which have an inverted (tractor pattern) stick.

Maine does not have any driver’s ed programs that you could get a license through or even get instruction on driving stick.

  5. John,

I applaud your perseverance. Most people would have just given up and said, “Well, in this lifetime, I’ll never learn how to drive a stick.” But you fought through the pain and eventually learned how to drive stick at the ripe age of 41. Better late than never.
